About the Chapel Hill Family
Behind Big Belly Que

Big Belly Que is a new generation of barbeque establishment, steeped in the best traditions of the legendary favorites.   We are dedicated to serving the best wood smoked meats, savory sides, and delectable desserts in North Carolina.
Chef Garret Fleming and his sister Eleanor Lacy have launched this endeavour.
Garret Fleming graduated from the Culinary Institute of America.  He spent some time working  in the kitchens of Charleston, S.C, including that of the Peninsula Grill. After almost a decade of helming some of the most popular eateries in Washington DC, Chef Garret left the capital for the Triangle and its exciting food scene.  In 2016, Garret began running Motto in Durham, which,  after a short and intense turnaround, was awarded 4 stars in the News & Observer, praising the creativity and execution of the menu.

Eleanor Lacy is a graduate of The University of the South (Medieval Studies), where she succeeded in establishing an ambitious student supper club, and failed to succeed in convincing the Watson fellowship to fund a year tasting the foods of the former Yugoslavia.  She grew up under the fine example of her mother, who patiently had taught herself the art of  baking. After retiring from managing a small coffee house, Mrs. Lacy spent her own twelve years as a housewife  honing her cooking and baking skills.  For the past two years she has earned a modest reputation baking Thanksgiving pies and Christmas cookies for neighbors and friends.
Chef Garret and Mrs. Lacy have always taken a keen interest in exploring barbecue throughout the many Southern states where they have lived.  Although Garret and Eleanor were born in the other Carolina,  they recognize this state's barbecue tradition as the finest and most delicious.  The recent closure of several legendary North Carolina barbecue establishments inspired them to start a new generation in the same tradition.  Big Belly Que is committed to offering only completely wood smoked meats and freshly prepared side dishes.   We serve you food we would want to eat.
